UCS7604 IC Pixel Protocol Overview

In previous posts, we disscussed the  4 channel IC Chip pixel protocols include SPI and DMX512 like UCS2904B, UCS8904B ,UCS512C4 and UCS512CNB which were designed by UCS New Technology Co. in China.

Today, let's discuss another 4 Channel IC pixel chip protocol named UCS7604.

This UCS7604 protocol was designed by UCS New Technology Co., in China. It still use the SPI protocol to drive IC pixels . While UCS7604 has redundant data line allows sequel transmission of bad pixels. This is the obvious function that interested us which UCS2904B / UCS8904B IC DO NOT have .

UCS7604 allows selection between RGB / RGBW is made through digital configuration, It has 16-bits resolution color dimming. This UCS7604 mainly comes in a SOP10 package, allowing us for more flexibility with LED solutions.

UCS8904 Technical Specifications:

Data Type Data only, NO Clock
Color Resolution 16 bits
Built-in Gamma Correction 2.2
assemble package SOP10
RGB Yes
RGBW Yes
Output Voltage 5 - 30V
Output Current 0 - 60mA /Channel
Current Control  4 Bits / Color
PWM Rate 16,00KHZ
Refresh Rate up to 500 fps
Data transfer Speed 800 / 1600kbps

UCS7604 Advantages:

  • Very High PWM rate 16,000KHZ allows for filming the pixels with 500fps appromately.
  • Drive 4 colors LED allowing for tones that were previously hard to achieve with single RGB strip.
  • 16 bits of data, 65536 grayscale for each color makes dimming curves very smooth.
  • RGB and White ( any other single color) can be independently controlled to allows us to create bolder and more vibrant colors than with RGB alone.
  • Redundant data line reduces chance of entire strip failure.
  • Additional built-in gamma correction enhances LED output to 16 bits, making colors more accurate and dimming curves more smooth.

UCS7604 Shortcomings:

  • No Clock data line, only data line restricts refresh rate to be limited by the protocol speed, which will generally be slow.
  • Signal protocol transimisson is still in series.
  • Couldn't be 2 pixels defective consecutive.

UCS7604 Cautions:

  1. If the output of controller no FDO, only connect the Data in cable of the led pixel strips to the DO port of controller. The FDIN cable couldn't be connect to the DO port. Otherwise the 1st pixels will be " dark " .
  2. Data transfer Speed, 800 / 1600kbps . The higher transfer speed, the more qty pixels. But the cable length will be shorter.
